Love this article, Cindy! I’ve been making a point to send updates to my senior dog’s foster mom who took amazing care of her before the adoption last month.
Beautiful words and mimicked me to a T. My husband and I moved to rural Colorado from urban Denver, bought a farm, built a shelter and have rescued and rehomed about 300 animals in about 30 years. We now dedicate our shelter to feral kitties….some can move on to barn homes, many have stayed to live out their lives in peace and love. Saying goodbye is so hard. Bittersweet because you know they are safe with you but will their new home take care of them like you have. I like to think most people are kind and want the very best for their new addition. To date, all of our adopters have been amazing. We have a policy that for whatever reason they cannot keep their pet, we will take them back.
Beautiful article and thank you a millions times for who you are and what you do❤️
Thank you for the kind words. People often say to me, "I could never do what you do" when I tell them I foster. I don't think I coud do what you do as a shelter owner! Thank you for the brueling work and the soft, but hard heart, you need to make difficult decisions.
This resonated with me, as someone who regularly grieves the permanent loss of my furry family members. The quote from Irving Townsend about choosing to surround ourselves with lives more temporary than our own has been my guiding light for many years. Well done!
I love that Debbie. We are grieving the sudden loss of our rescue dog. He became ill suddenly and no treatment plan worked. I still hold his favorite stuffie at night. We have loved and lost many dogs, cats, birds, our rescue iguanas Emerald and everyone is crowded in my heart but we are going to adopt again this fall…we will look for a bonded pair because we have to put our love somewhere and our broken hearts behind us❤️❤️
Wow! So many profound life lessons from fostering. What an amazing gift to your kids, and of course to the animals you nurture with love so they can find their forever home. Thank you for all the work you do, and for sharing your thoughts in this beautiful piece!
It takes a strong and wonderful person to foster. You are an incredible person.
A beautiful article which made me cry.
Thank you for those kind words. I hope you shed good tears!

My heart tells me she will be forever grateful!

What a fascinating prospect - teaching people how to grieve. Thank you for this, Cindy. I'll be chewing on this for a while.
